Thinking aloud: AX.UN (pfblogs.org)

(Disclosure: I've owned Artis REIT for more than two years)Being a long-term value investor, I try not to worry too much about short-term fluctuations, but that doesn't mean I'm not keenly interested in the reasons behind them. If a stock loses, say, 10% of its value, I want to know why. Did earnings fall off a cliff or did they lose a key customer? Or did it simply get knocked back by a broad market sell-off, but still has a decent long-term outlook? If it's the former, I'll probably avoid it,

Lots of Good Educational News from Arizona and Beyond

Tue, 08 Apr 2008 19:37:38 PDT
by David Safier I keep on meaning to write about these, and other, articles that have come my way, but something always seems to come up. So here is a list of interesting articles, most of them positive, that you can read yourself if you're interested. (Note: I find myself complaining on this blog most of the time, talking about what's wrong with education. Yet every day, thousands of gifted teachers, and sometimes less gifted but very hard working teachers, are doing wonderful things with th

What Worked and Sucked Today 482008

Worked: TITN - Ripped today up 8% unfortunately I can pick the stocks, but I can’t ride them all the way. I got out with a 3.6% gain, so I can’t complain. CPST, DRYS, and JOYG all finished higher. It looks like I’m going to have to sit through a possible drop tomorrow though. My RUT long was swapped today to the short side along with extra shorting of the NDX. I didn’t like the way the market was acting today so if there is some profit tomorrow morning I’m taking it. Basically the long RUT

Don’t Downgrade Public Channels by Scott Hanley Hartford Courant (CT) 04/07/08 3 comments ] I applaud The Courant’s decision to encourage the General Assembly to protect the Connecticut Television Network from substandard delivery on AT&T’s U-verse video system editorial, April 4, "Don't Downgrade CT-N"]. Tue, 08 Apr 2008 19:40:46 PDT
This morning's Senate Armed Services Committee hearings on Iraq showed pretty decisively that the Bush administration's policies are made of straw. Their chief advocate in the Senate, John McCain, delivered an uninspired and somewhat risible defense of them. Here is the conclusion of John McCain's prepared remarks (PDF): Congress must not choose to lose in Iraq. We should choose, instead, to succeed. That's a measure of the depth of his thinking about the morass McCain helped the nation to
